Lady Alina Vain has spent her life drawing maps to sate her curiosity for coastlines and countrysides. Now her aunt has drawn the course of Alina’s future: a marriage to the lord of a remote coastal hold in exchange for control of its salt trade.
Vale’s Hold is no place for a bride.
Its people worship a hungry god. Its lord speaks of Alina as though she were an offering already laid upon the altar. When she escapes their ceremony, she falls through the cliffs into a cavern cut off from the sea and into the keeping of the creature trapped there.
Umber is enormous, inhumanly beautiful, and made for the deep. He has teeth built to hold struggling prey and coils strong enough to crush her. He is also the first person who has ever asked Alina what she wants.
As the stone above them begins to fail, Alina searches for a way back to the surface. But escape would mean leaving Umber beneath the temple and returning to the people who still intend to claim her.
The sea is coming in. The temple is coming down. And Alina refuses to leave the only man who ever saw her as more than something to be traded away.
